AFGHANISTAN
Clearing up some apparent confusion from last month’s LN is Dave Kenny of BBCM: Al, unfortunately the Afghan item below quite misleading, I don’t know where the references to Pakistan and Kandahar originated – certainly not BBCM – but someone seems to have confused what is really a pretty straightforward setup in radio terms:
- The station on 7084-v did not broadcast from Pakishtan. It has always been based in Taloqan, capital of Takhar Province. It used the name Radio Afghanistan or Takahar Provincial Radio while it was controlled by Rabbani’s forces. When Taleban took over the Taloqan area, the radio station was simply renamed Voice of Shariah of Takhar Province, in line with all other Taleban-controlled provincial radio stations.
- The station on 7200v is the main Voice of Shariah national station from Kabul – it has never operated from Kandahar.
- Although all Afghan Radio stations usually now identify themselves as “Voice of Shariah” they also sometimes use other idents. The Kabul station will sometimes ID as “Afghan Radio,” or “Radio Afghanistan” and the Taloquan station will somtimes say “Takhar Radio.”
- None of these are clandestine stations in any sense – they are the main domestic services within Afghanistan, operated by the defacto government there. The only clandestine link is that the Takhar station, during the time is was run by Rabbani, in the past sometimes carried “Voice of Free Tajikistan” programming.
Hope this clarifies the situation. (Kenny-BBCM)
Voice of Shariah. I have been following the recent reports that Taleban has reactivated one of Afghanistan’s old xmtr – 4775 100kW. The channel is occupied by AIR Imphal 50 kw. Absolutely no signs of Vof Shariah. (18-Oct/Weerakoon- SLK/UADX/WWDXC TopNews/Bueschel-GER)
4773 Voice of Shariah very weak at 0133 with Qu’ran recital and religious talk, many ments of Kabul and Afghanistan; lost signal at 0l57 (sign off?), //7197 poor, also vanished under strong VOA. (24-OCt/Vaghjee-MAU) 7198.9v Voice of Shari’a (Voice of Islamic Law), 1645-1705. (18-Oct/Korinek/NU/DXW/WWDXC TopNews/Bueschel-GER)
On 17 October, anti-Taleban forces took over Radio Takhar. [On 18th Oct R. Takhar was heard at 1230 on 7085 kHz; the bc consisted entirely of songs about the motherland, sung in Dari and Pashto. Concluding the bc at 1315, a presenter announced that from 19th Oct, Radio Takhar would broadcast from 1130- 1230.] (BBCM)

The misssionary organization SIM reports that Radio Mosoj Chaski will soon go on the air in Cochabamba, following the recent granting of a license by the Bolivian government. The station has already produced and recorded 1 year of programs in the Quechua language. The construction of the studio building is completed, and the programming team has moved in. Construction continues on the caretaker’s quarters at the 10 kW transmitter site. Radio MOSOJ CHASKI will proclaim the Christian Gospel in Quechua to the entire nation. I would assume by these remarks that the station will use SW, since a 10 kW MW transmitter would not give national coverage. (Colin Miller-CAN, VE3CMT, Oct 28/BC-DX/Bueschel-GER)

Radio Asia Canada has disappeared as its ties to the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) showed its head in their program. We were about to expose them to the German Govt. (G. Victor Goonetilleke-SLK 4S7VK, Oct 14) This should be satisfying to our reporter Ernie Behr, who first exposed their connections to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, considered a terrorist organization in Sri Lanka. Harold Sellers, Toronto, hard-core-dx, also notes their “freqs empty, website not connecting, telephone number unanswered.” Via hard-core-dx, Paul Ormandy, NZ, says RAC was last heard on 15245 around the end of Sep. CLANDESTINE – LATIN AMERICA
Colombian clandestine Voz de la Resistencia 6239.80 at 1059 strong and clear with vocal anthem mentioning “companeros”, straight into musical selections. Just missed an annct before the anthem, but voiceover during second song after anthem said “Transmite La Voz de la Resistencia”. These guys play some nice cumbias – shame about the telco-quality audio. Tnx Morhmann/Valko tip via Johnson. 1051 Nov 10, came on with a Spanish-language version of “Seasons in the Sun” (of all things), then one other LAm popular song, then “Companeros de la FARC” anthem. M announcer with s/on sequence just before 1100, giving schedule as 6:00 to 7:30 in the morning (1100-1230 UTC) and 4:30 to 6:00 in the evening (2130-2300 UTC) on 6240. Then back into music. Sorry, everyone, but the new WRMI relay is a farce, as expected. UT Mon Oct 26 at 0401, WRMI 9955 had fair strength, but the Cuban jammers were at least equal, often overpowering. One might understand 67% of R. Prague if one wanted to put up with the noise, but why should we? Free advice for WRMI and R. Prague: it’s time to try a new frequency, and see if the Cubans ruin it too. The new frequency, however inconvenient it may be for WRMI, should not have been used before, and should never carry any Cuban exile programming, or to be safe, not anything in Spanish at all (Hauser-OK/Rev. of International Broadcasting)
