At one time other than travel or reading, shortwave was the only means of doing so.&nbsp; But history and technology have changed all that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, English language programs and broadcasts from <strong>Radio Prague International <\/strong>(Czechia),<strong> Copenhagen Calling <\/strong>(formerly Radio Denmark), <strong>Deutsche Welle<\/strong> (Germany), <strong>RTE<\/strong> (Ireland), <strong>Radio Polonia<\/strong> (Poland), <strong>Radio Romania International<\/strong> (Romania), <strong>Radio Slovakia International<\/strong> (Slovakia), <strong>Radio Exterior de Espana<\/strong> (Spain), <strong>BBC World Service<\/strong> (UK) and <strong>Vatican Radio<\/strong> (Vatican City) can still be heard on shortwave either directly or by relay.&nbsp; Frequencies and schedules were provided in the May issue of <em>The Journal<\/em> and are posted and updated on the NASWA website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naswa.net\">www.naswa.net<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what of the other European international broadcasting stations that used to be on shortwave but are no longer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ALBANIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Tirana International<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1\">Streams a 30-minute program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1\">Mon.-Sat. \u2013 1600, 2000, 2200<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1\">Tues.-Sun. \u2013 0130, 0600, 0830, 1130<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1\">publicradiofan.com&nbsp;&nbsp; 79.106.48.2 (sole active audio link currently)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rtsh.al\/rti\/en\/\">https:\/\/rtsh.al\/rti\/en\/<\/a> (text)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1\">[Note: audio links from station site appear to be inoperative.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ANDORRA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Radio Andorra<\/strong> is no longer in service.&nbsp; <strong>Radio and Television of Andorra<\/strong>, the national broadcaster, has no English language programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AUSTRIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Austria International<\/strong> and <strong>O1<\/strong> \u201cReport from Austria\u201d have been discontinued.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ORF FM4<\/strong>, streamed from &lt;fm4.orf.at&gt;, is public broadcaster <strong>ORF<\/strong>\u2019s youth and music bilingual (German and English) station and includes regular newscasts, programs and segments in English, and on-demand multimedia items, including podcasts.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BELARUS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Radio Belarus <a href=\"https:\/\/radiobelarus.by\/en\/internet\">https:\/\/radiobelarus.by\/en\/internet<\/a> no longer broadcasts on shortwave but today offers an English language radio service six hours a day carried on satellite and streamed on the Internet.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BELGIUM<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Vlaanderen International<\/strong> is no longer in service and <strong>VRT<\/strong>, the Dutch public broadcaster and its former parent, provides no programming in English.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>RTBF<\/strong>, the French public broadcaster, has never offered any English language programming.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Yugoslavia <\/strong>ceased operation upon the dissolution of the country.&nbsp; There are several others that haven\u2019t been updated in some time and remain archived.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GREECE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Voice of Greece (ERT)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vog.ert.gr\/?lang=en\">https:\/\/vog.ert.gr\/?lang=en<\/a> is a 24\/7 English language radio streaming service that includes podcasts and text\/audio\/video content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HUNGARY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Budapest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No longer operating.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/eng.lsm.lv\">https:\/\/eng.lsm.lv<\/a> streams extensive text\/audio\/video on demand for English speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LITHUANIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LRT (Radio Vilnius)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrt.lt\/en\/news-in-english\">http:\/\/www.lrt.lt\/en\/news-in-english<\/a> streams text\/audio\/video on demand and offers a weekly Friday e-mail subscription to the LRT English Newsletter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LUXEMBOURG<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Luxembourg <\/strong>is no longer in operation.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RTL Today <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/today.rtl.lu\/radio\">https:\/\/today.rtl.lu\/radio<\/a><a> has a 24\/7 English language audio stream plus on demand text\/audio\/video.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ARA City Radio <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radioara.org\/about\/\">https:\/\/www.radioara.org\/about\/<\/a> has a 24\/7 audio stream plus on demand text\/audio\/video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MALTA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Voice of the Mediterranean<\/strong>, a joint Maltese-Libyan operation, ceased broadcasting at the end of 2003.&nbsp; While there are several radio stations that broadcast and stream in English from Malta, all are primarily music stations with little news or information content outside of BBC World Service relays.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MOLDOVA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Moldova International <\/strong>was discontinued in 2013.&nbsp; There is no replacement.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NETHERLANDS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>RNW (Radio Nederland Wereldomroep) <\/strong>ceased broadcasts on June 29, 2012.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Seagull <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/radioseagull.com\/player\/player.html\"><strong>https:\/\/radioseagull.com\/player\/player.html<\/strong><\/a>is an English language national rock music\/talk station.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regional English language stations carrying local news include <strong>BRAM Radio<\/strong> (<strong>Broadcast Amsterdam<\/strong>) &lt;https:\/\/broadcastamsterdam.nl&gt;, <strong>English Breakfast Radio<\/strong> in Amsterdam<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mixcloud.com\/broadcastamsterdam\/\">https:\/\/www.mixcloud.com\/broadcastamsterdam\/<\/a>&gt; and Eindhoven\u2019s <strong>Radio 4 Brainport<\/strong> &lt;https:\/\/zeno.fm\/radio\/radio-4-brainport-747-am\/&gt;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NORWAY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NRK<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its international service <strong>Radio Norway<\/strong> <strong>International<\/strong> is no longer in service.&nbsp; All English language programming consists only of a relay of the <strong>BBC World Service<\/strong> on the <strong>Nyheter<\/strong> network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PORTUGAL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>RDP (Radio Portugal) <\/strong>ceased broadcasting in English in the 1980s.&nbsp; There is no comparable service on offer via radio or streaming for domestic or international audiences today.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>RUSSIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Moscow <\/strong>and <strong>Voice of Russia <\/strong>are no longer in operation.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sputnik Radio &lt;https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/radio\/&gt; <\/strong>is a 24\/7 multilingual international audio service provided via satellite and streamed over the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Capital FM<\/strong> in Moscow <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalfm.moscow\">https:\/\/capitalfm.moscow<\/a> succeeded Moscow FM 105.2 which was a 24\/7 English-language station that featured international music, news, culture, and weather. It primarily targets expats and tourists.&nbsp; One doubts Capital FM is as informative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SERBIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Yugoslavia <\/strong>ceased operation upon the dissolution of the country.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International Radio of Serbia<\/strong> is no longer in operation. No station is providing regular English language programming in the country.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SLOVENIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Yugoslavia <\/strong>ceased operation upon the dissolution of the country.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Si (Radio Slovenia International) &lt;https:\/\/radiosi.rtvslo.si&gt; <\/strong>streams a mix of international hits and Slovene music, with speech and news, weather forecasts and essential real-time national traffic updates in English, German, and Slovenian.&nbsp; News in English also is available as a daily podcast.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SWEDEN<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Sweden <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sverigesradio.se\/radio-sweden\">https:\/\/www.sverigesradio.se\/radio-sweden<\/a> now streams two podcasts: \u201cRadio Sweden Daily\u201d, a 5-minute newscast and \u201cRadio Sweden Weekly\u201d, a half hour roundup of the main news of the week.&nbsp; The latter is streamed Fridays at 1730 GMT on SR-P2 and SR-P6, repeated on Mondays at 1730 on SR-P6.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also a regularly updated multimedia web site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SWITZERLAND<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SRI (Swiss Radio International) <\/strong>was discontinued in 2004.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SwissInfo,<\/strong>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/\">https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/<\/a> created in 1999, has replaced it.&nbsp; It is a comprehensive multimedia website provided by the Swiss public broadcaster SRG, is updated continuously and offers several podcasts and newsletters to which one may subscribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Switzerland in Sound<\/strong>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/switzerlandinsound.com\">https:\/\/switzerlandinsound.com<\/a> is a website maintained by the prominent former SRI broadcaster Bob Zanotti who, with the late Bob Thomann, hosted the popular program \u201cSwiss Shortwave Merry-Go-Round\u201d \u2013 later just known as \u201cthe Two Bobs\u201d &#8212; for 24 years.&nbsp; In addition to SRI-related archival material, the website \u201cin the classic radio style, enhanced by text and pictures\u2026 include(s) a wide range of subject matter from candid one-on-one interviews with interesting people, to entertaining, in-depth features and reports about Swiss life and society, as well as exciting, colorful, animated visits to tourist destinations and attractions.&nbsp; In addition, \u201cBob\u2019s Blog\u201d offers personal comments and insights into Switzerland and Swiss life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UKRAINE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Kiev <\/strong>ceased operation upon the dissolution of the USSR.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Radio Ukraine International<\/strong>\u2019s English language broadcasts and streams have been suspended since Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hromadske Radio<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/hromadske.radio\/en\">https:\/\/hromadske.radio\/en<\/a> is an independent public media platform that streams its broadcasts in Ukrainian but offers English language news and other content, including some podcasts, on its web page.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-contrast-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-contrast-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--1\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-content-justification-center is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-82936891 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">compiled by John Figliozzi<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-content-justification-center is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-82936891 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last modified <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-post-date__modified-date wp-block-post-date has-large-font-size\"><time datetime=\"2026-07-18T12:03:32-05:00\">July 18, 2026<\/time><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us embraced shortwave as a means of peering into foreign lands and learning firsthand about their cultures, politics and people.&nbsp; At one time other than travel or reading, shortwave was the only means of doing so.&nbsp; But history and technology have changed all that.
