BADX 2009 "DX Clams"

July 30-31 (UTC), Granite Pier, Rockport MA (42°40'N 70°37'W)

The following reports are from participants of the Boston Area DXers (BADX) annual summer mediumwave expedition to 'the Pier.'

Chris Black N1CP; R-75, 16 x 25-ft portable Flag.
Well, I made the three hour trek to Granite Pier again this year. The traffic [through Boston] was horrendous as normal. (How does any sane human being live in that town?) First stop, as always, was Woodman's in Essex for dinner.
At the Pier, Gary Thorburn set up a mid-size SuperLoop, Bruce supported his Delta with a 23 foot collapsible pole, Mark used his usual micro car-top loop and I set up a portable Flag 16 by 25 and my new Mark Connelly nulling box did a great job of keeping the back end at bay.
DX was decent for this time of year and the weather was good, not even too many bugs. My main mission was to check-ride the new Honda set-up which included a new deep-cycle battery for the laptop (I tested it at home and it ran the laptop for over 30 hours). And the transformer didn't seem to introduce any noise that I could discerne. It's great to have all my Excel logs, EMWG, other references, and Total Recorder nice and handy. I also wanted to fully test a new software logging and control program for the R-75 that I have been working on with a guy in Canada for a year or so now. Just clicking on a frequency line tunes the R-75 (also works with the 756 at home) and even puts it on the appropriate sideband and a field on the screen shows what countries inhabit that frequency.
The issue of lighting after dark has always been a pain. I have used lanterns and flashlights before, but this time I went to an RV store and got a DC light that I also hook to the deep cycle, so no car battery drain issues. I have it mounted up at the sun roof and it slides back and forth to where I need it most and it worked great. Another pain has always been the tear down in the dark. I think I improved this by the use of a hikers head lamp on an old baseball hat.
All in all, I was pleased with everything, except the three hour drive home with 93 at a standstill, even at midnight for construction. Did I mention I hate that town? (Not present: The new 9 week old DX cats, the Radio Reloj twins, dit dah dit and dit dah dit. But to keep the vet from getting confused we also call them Miles and Blondie.)
    That's it from here.

While the DX was "standard stuff" by Mark Connelly's criteria, it was very exciting for me, as this was my first trip to the Pier with a SuperLoop, which could be nulled off the back side, offering a cardioid reception pattern. With Boston and NYC generally behind the antenna, the DX to the east was much better than with the bi-directional tuned loop I had used previously.
The SuperLoop design is well documented by Bruce Conti on his website. It belongs to the same family of terminated, untuned, single-loop vertical plane wire antennas as the Flag, Ewe, Pennant, and Delta. Basically, it's a rectangle of wire with a terminating resistor at the lower corner of the null end, and the feedpoint to the receiver (and optionally a preamp) being the lower corner of the "hot" end. By shorting the resistor, the loop reverts to being approximately bi-directional. Playing around with this while tuned to stations off the back of the antenna gave me a chance to seehow deep the null is. My Drake's S-meter indicates about a 3 S-unit null with the resistor, at least before sunset when most of the backside reception is ground wave.
An example of how well the null on my loop was working could be heard by tuning to 590 kHz. This, of course, brought in WEZE Boston, but being off the back of the antenna, it was attenuated to the point that co-channel VOCM in St John's, Newfoundland, was audible at about the same volume level as WEZE.
The following TAs were "armchair copy" at times (or would be if I had remembered to bring along my Babelfish headphones to translate):

   783   Mauritania
  1134   Croatia
1224   Spain COPE parallel 1296 kHz

Most noteworthy was the use of terminated broadband loop antennas by all DXers (three SuperLoops and one Delta).  I used a "Mr. LongArm" model 2324 extension pole that extends to 23 feet to support a Delta, a huge improvement over the PVC tower disaster of a few years ago and the copper pipe used in more recent DX Clams.  The pole is the type normally used by construction workers to paint ceilings, replace light bulbs, etc. in places with high ceilings. It's available from Home Depot. Several from the Cape Ann amateur radio group stopped by to witness how transatlantic DX is received on the AM broadcast band. Some mentioned reading about the past DX Clams in Pop' Comm and on the BADX website. The nulling capability of terminated loops was demonstrated by nulling the local 740 to receive Newfoundland, and with good listenable reception of stations like 1134 Croatia and 1206 France.   In addition to the DXpedition, I had been looking forward to the pre-DX dinner at Woodman's.  There's nothing like Chubby's whole-belly fried clams to grease the DX experience.
The following DXpedition logs were primarily the result of SDR spectrum captures at the top and bottom of the hour.  Much of the time between captures was spent talking it up with DXers and curious visitors.  The most valuable catch was unequivocal ID of Iran on 1188 kHz, a new log for me.
